Raw Little Piggy Bento

Posted by Nina on Aug 10, 2010

bentoraw I know that it has been a while since I have done a bento blog post.. so here you go!

I am following a pretty strict diet lately, no bread carbs 4 days per week with a limited calorie in take.. when you’re a Vegan and you don’t get carbs…. what exactly do you eat?! I’ve been playing around with some raw foods this week and so far I am really liking them. I also like that most recipes I am finding are smaller servings which is great because I am the only one in my house who eats this way!

I am trying to stick with the motto “eat the rainbow” too so I can make sure I am getting all the nutrition I need. The large bento contains spicy cashew broccoli stir-“fry” from this recipe.. the smaller cup contains 1/2 of a protein bar.. and in the cup just plain ice water! I am not eating raw all the time, just to clear that up! I am just using raw recipes to help balance my diet.

Little Boy Blues

Posted by Nina on Jun 16, 2010

boyblue

Everyone I know is pregnant this year.. and everyone is having boys! So that means it’s time to make little boy quilts! This is a sweet little red and blue color scheme and the backing is a navy blue flannel with little red fire trucks! I can’t wait to see how this one looks finished. It’s just adorable! After its washed and quilted it should measure out to be about a 36″ square. The binding I have chosen for it is a red check print. I used various fat quarters and cut them down to 4.5″ squares but the design is very charm pack friendly! Mom does not have a nursery theme that I am aware of so I ran around the quilt shop just picking up colors that I thought looked good together.

Now for an update about the surgery… if you ever have to have all 4 wisdom teeth pulled, just go to sleep and wake up when it’s over! I decided I wanted local anesthetic with the gas.. it probably would have been fine for most people but apparently I am super hard to numb because I felt the whole thing! He used 9 canisters of local anesthesia and kept my gas up super high but it was a horrible, horrible experience and you know what the worst part was? during the pull what should come on the radio but Peter Gabriel’s Sledge Hammer! Yeah. Perfect. I lost some jaw bone and got some stitches and I am still quite sore but I am finally able to eat some solid foods again. I survived and the worst is hopefully behind me now!

Like Mother, Like Daughter.. or something like that.

Posted by Nina on Aug 27, 2009

Bella went in for her yearly vet exam and everything was fine.. but since she will be 5 this year.. wow! 5! her doctor told us it might be time to add some joint vitamins to help prevent and/or prolong arthritis in her back knees from her luxating patella. She has no pain and her knees don’t bother her.. so this is all as joint protection for her senior years. I asked the doctor what I should give her and she replied “just a regular glucosamine chondroitin”.

I have what is called “dancer’s knee”.. its basically a wearing down of the cartilage from repetitive movement.. so I was advised to take glucosamine chondroitin to help keep the joints lubricated and hopefully I can avoid knee replacements later on. It helps with the pain a lot! so if I can feel the advantages of the medicine, I am sure Bella will too. So there you have it… my little girl has knees just as bad as mine and she’s been told she should be taking the supplement too for the exact same reason I am! How’s that for irony.

Hoopin’

Posted by Nina on Apr 9, 2009

There is this hooping craze walking around Ravelry these days and I drank the water. Not only did Gleek have one, but frecklegirl, and iSeL Knits too! Then I found a few more friends also had them and.. well.. whats a girl to do, but join the club? I figured it would be a fun way to add some core toning into my schedule and it looked like a whole lot of fun! I am not talking about the hula hooping days of childhood.. oh no, I am talking about the super sexy hoop dance.

I kinda suck at it though… and I mean suck hard. I can do all about 3 rotations before it drops. Today’s best has been about 7-10 rotations before it dropped like a ton of bricks. Sergey tried and he’s a natural.. naturally, there really isn’t anything he can’t do… I am sure that my feet and ankles are going to be a beautiful shade of purple tomorrow… but I am no quitter! I will learn to hoop dance… even if it kills me! With that, I’ll leave you with some images of my pretty hoop 🙂 I purchased the wildflower limited edition glow in the dark 43″ hoop from hoopnotica.

Becareful with ZYRTEC = ITCHING!

Posted by Nina on Mar 11, 2008

Something this drug maker fails to release to the public… which I am now going through.. symptoms include:

– Weight Gain
– Fatigue
– Lethargy
– Nausea
– Red Welts (though very few)
– Itching

zyrtecwithdrawal.blogspot.com
www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=19835&name=ZYRTEC

I’m on day 6 of the itching… think of flea/mosquito bites all over your body.. or the chicken pox… fun, no? I have also lost almost 2 full pounds since stopping the Zyrtec which is amazing because I haven’t lost so much as a pound since June of 2007!!! So if you know anyone taking this drug or considering doing so…. please educate them about the possible side effects. I’m angry I was never warned. Even if this only effects 1 in every 1000 that is still a LOT of people who will have this problem.. and YOU could be one of them.

If you suffer from this, DO NOT take another anti-histamine.. it will prolong the itching effects.. instead deal with it by using mentholated lotions and creams. Some people say Vicks-Vapo-Rub helps.

Tell me again that fat discrimination doesn’t exist?

Posted by Nina on Feb 1, 2008

First of all.. let me just say that I don’t believe for a second this will ever pass.. however, for those of you that think that over weight people aren’t picked on, harassed, or discriminated against — you’re wrong… so very, very, very wrong. If you’re one of the morons laughing amongst yourself at the fat girl eating at the end of your lunchroom table — grow up. Now… let me ask you, does YOUR body mass index say YOU aren’t over weight? Think again…. most people’s BMI are overweight. Then read this carefully…

Tell me again that fat discrimination doesn’t exist?
From Sandy at JunkFood Science:

It has actually happened. Lawmakers have proposed legislation that forbids restaurants and food establishments from serving food to anyone who is obese (as defined by the State). Under this bill, food establishments are to be monitored for compliance under the State Department of Health and violators will have their business permits revoked.

House Bill 282 was introduced in the 2008 Mississippi legislative session on Friday by Representative W.T. Mayhall, Jr., a retired pharmaceutical salesman with DuPont-Merk. Its co-authors are Bobby Shows, a businessman, and John Read, a pharmacist.

Emphasis mine. Also note that the people who penned the damn thing are in a position to benefit from its repercussions, given that “Prescriptions for obesity drugs in 2006 were more than eight times the number prescribed in 1999“.

In the immortal words of, well, me-just-now: “You’ve got to be fucking shitting me.” In more eloquent terms, i think Meowser said it best:

However, I will say that fat hate is one of the last forms of prejudice in which even most people who are subjected to it think they are getting exactly what they deserve.

So for all of you reading this, i want you to ask yourself: should the way you look affect whether or not you’re allowed to eat in public places? Think carefully before you answer that.

ETA: The address to write in protest is that of Rep. Mayhall, and it’s tmayhall@house.ms.gov. Thanks to The Rotund for that bit of info.

It is illegal to force someone to get on a scale in public, but that didn’t stop Northwest Airlines from trying to force anyone they considered overweight to buy 2 seats on their airlines. Last time I checked, they were in trouble and ticket sales weren’t too hot, I think most local resturants would object highly… most of America is over weight, what would THAT do their businesses?

So let me say this again… are YOU too fat to eat in public? what about your mother? your sister? your aunt? your child? or your spouce? and how does it make you feel that your tax dollars are funding these stupid, pointless, bills? I for one would rather my tax dollars fund a bill that promotes something positive like forcing resturants to provide nutrition information on their menus and forcing them to offer healthy solutions.

where the hell was I!??

Posted by Nina on Oct 15, 2007

Have you ever felt like you fell off the face of the planet? — Seriously. Ok, so I need to stop watching Grey’s Anatomy because its left me saying seriously, seriously all the time. Well thats how I feel. Like I have fallen into some big void and popped out a couple weeks later!

First of all, I was down last week with some shit-cold I caught from some little brat at Jo-Anne Fabrics! It wasn’t so bad.. I got to lay around a lot but it mostly made me want to stay in bed.. not the good cold kind where your sick but you can still read books, watch tv, etc.. it was the sucky cold kind where all you can do is lay around, you get dizzy and icky feeling so you just wanna lay around.

And what happens when two people who like gaming get married?? NOTHING. That’s what happens. We pretty much spent the entire last week (and ALL of the weekend) taking turns playing our 360. I ended up playing games until 6am on Sunday morning.. when Sergey tells me “You’re just like a little kid!” … which makes me think that maybe we are both too young to raise kids! lol I mean you CAN’T stay up until 6am playing video games if you have kids cause they will wake up in an hour, and then you have to start your day all over again and who wants a zombie mom? I’m totally not ready to grow up yet.

everyone loves a vegan

Posted by Nina on Jul 10, 2007

It’s been a while since I mentioned a book other than Harry Potter.. so today, thats what I am doing. I picked up a copy of Skinny Bitch by Barnouin & Freedman since I heard it mentioned some where on some blog whos URL I don’t remember.. anyway, I know this book isn’t for everyone.. some people I know find it ‘rude’.. I on the other hand found it entertaining and educational.. but to save on time.. here’s a quote:

You should not need anything to wake up. If you can’t wake up without it, it’s because you are either addicted to caffeine, sleep deprived or a generally unhealthy slob. It may seem like the end of the world to give up your daily dose. But it’s not heroin, girls, and you’ll learn to live without it.

You are a total moron if you think the Atkins Diet will make you thin.

I guess I don’t find anything they say as offensive because I don’t take it personally. I actually rather enjoyed the book. I don’t agree that you must be Vegan to be thin.. hell, you don’t even have to be Vegetarian! but other than that, I pretty much agree. People think less and less about what they are shoving into their mouthes these days.. I am no exception.. I however, am making the effort to be more knowledgible about what I consume.. after reading the book I began looking over my lacto-vegetarian diet and noticed I was consuming a lot of dairy products.. so I pretty much decided to give it all up cold turkey along with my sweeteners and I am now Vegan!

I am using Rice Dream’s milk, 100% pure Maple syrup for sweeteners.. I will be trying to find a soy cheese I can stomach sometime in the near future. I stumbled upon PETA’s list of Vegan junk-foods.. I grabbed me some of Wheat-Free/Dairy-Free Fig Newmans — not bad!

For Ladies Only

Posted by Nina on Apr 28, 2007

Since my decision to start a healthier life, one of the decisions I made was to exercise regularly and to eat better… but this also led me down the path of re-examining what I was putting in my body medically. Did you know that the FDA doesn’t require tampon or pad companies to include what their products are made out of on their packages? That kind of scared me.. I started liking the idea of using the natural sponge instead of tampons.. but the thought of the sponge kicked my OCD cleaning habits into over drive.. (how could you REALLY keep it clean!?) so I began looking for other ideas and that led me to The Moon Cup. I am in love.

No leakage!, no discomfort, cheaper cost in the long run, its kind of cute, and you only need to clean it out every 8-10 hours,AND it’s made in the USA. The only thing that I found annoying (and most others do too I have come to find) is the stem. You will almost definitely have to shorten yours a tad (will still be returnable as long as 1/2 the stem is intact).. and they have a 90 day – money back guarantee! It’s not for ladies who are afraid of their womanly bits as you do have to pull it out… I however, don’t even find it as gross as our other products!

Why oh why, didn’t I hear about this thing sooner?!

The Keeper & Moon Cup:
Available since 1987, this is the alternative feminine hygiene product made from medical grade silicone, is manufactured in the U. S. Only The Moon Cup produced by The Keeper Inc., is FDA approved. The Moon Cup is for all women, but especially for those with allergies to latex rubber. Offered in two sizes (A and B).

UPDATE: So I have been using this thing through my first cycle, and a friend emailed me and asked me to explain the pro’s and con’s of using it.. so here they are. 🙂

PRO:
+ Totally undetectable when wearing
+ No problems with leakage even while exercising vigorously
+ Holds much more than your average tampon with less changing required
+ Wearing through the night without discomfort
+ You can feel (with your finger) if the cup is in place and completely unfolded (no crease in the cup should be felt.. if you can still feel it or it hasn’t unfolded, it probably isn’t up high enough.. reinsert.)
+ Heaviest day on my cycle, I had no problems wearing for 6hrs, I could have worn another 4 before even needing to empty!
+ Ordered online on late Monday night and it arrived to my door on Thursday. Very fast shipping.
+ Cute little bag to keep it in.
+ I was pretty happy with the cost & I am even considering ordering another to keep in my purse at all times.
+ Ladies with latex allergies now have a product they can use.
+ Soft rubber cup that bends and moves with you, no rigid product to stay up in the cervix when you’re moving around.
+ You have to clean it out. This means YOU control what you clean it with, how often you remove it, and you know what your cleaning it with! YAY! No strange products in your vajayjay to give you more infections. I clean mine with gentle soap and water (rinsing very well) every time. No odor. However, if you are concerned you can use 1part vinegar with 6-9 parts water, then rinse very well.
+ No odor! Some feminine products let people know your having your moon cycle because you either smell strongly of flowers or ahem, I think we all know what the other smells like… No added dyes, perfumes, or strange products that we may or may not know about in tampons and pads.
+ Environment friendly! Nothing to throw away.
+ Website says it lasts up to 10years!

CON:
– The stem is a little long and without wearing it once for a few hours you don’t really know how much you need to trim.. it isn’t really a hassle or anything but it can get poky from time to time.
– It’s not completely idiot proof… for the first time you wear it, I would suggest doing it a day or two before your period begins to make sure you know how to insert and remove without causing a mess.. it can get slippery and you may just drop it into the toilet if you’re not paying attention to how you remove. (been there!)
– You have to clean it out. This is on the pro list also… but for those of you who are too grossed out to see your own blood, this might gross you out to remove it and reinsert it… but chances are, if this is you, you already aren’t reading this far anyway so nevermind!

There you have it. I have 3 cons which really aren’t cons at all.

knit 1, doctors x 2

Posted by Nina on Mar 6, 2007

I finally got the baby sweater finished and blocked. I decided to use some purple buttons on this set and now that its finished… I like it a little more than when I had started… the color still isn’t my favorite… but it isn’t so bad now that it is not in pieces.

I had 2, yes TWO, doctor appointments on Monday. I got some rad new contact lenses (plus a free pair of clear ones!), and 2 types of allergy meds (Zyrtec and Nasonex, can’t you just hear Antonio Bandaras saying that in his sexy little accent?), I guess he thought one wasn’t sufficant enough! lol He had given me Zyrtec before and it always worked well in the past only this time he told me to take it at bedtime… last night I did just that and all day today I am in a zombie like state. I don’t want to move, I don’t want to even walk to the bathroom.. all I want to do is curl up in bed and sleep for a week. SERIOUSLY! That’s how this medicine made me feel! I don’t ever remember Zyrtec making me so sleepy before… did they change the ingredients or something!? It’s a bit too soon to see how well Nasonex works for me.. but for the first time this winter I was able to actually smell the candles in my kitchen!

The contact lenses I bought are Elegance Opaques in Light Blue… which I found out are made within the USA but are only sold in Canada.. so to purchase from another country you must shop via the web for them…. if they are made within the USA why aren’t they SOLD in the USA?! If you inquire about them you are told they are the same as Natural Touch, and they are clearly NOT the same. Elegance are hand painted lenses while Natural Touch are not. Elegance has a much more natural looking pupil hole while NT has a thunder bolt effect. The free pair I got are Acuvue Oasis…….. I LOVE THEM! They are so comfortable, I wore them all day and didn’t need drops once! No changes in my prescriptions in the past 2 years at all.. she upped my contact in my left eye to balance them out.. I can now wear the same contact in both eyes *YAY* which means buying boxes of lenses is cheaper because I can use one box for both eyes.
